Understanding Dental & Vision Coverage

People ask all the time what dental insurance we recommend. The answer is, it depends.

Most dentists will accept a PPO dental plan and bill them for you, but you will get a better coverage on your claims if you use an in-network HMO or PPO dental network provider.

To get a good value out of your individual dental insurance, consider these things:

  • Does my current dentist participate in any dental insurance networks?
  • If they don’t, will they accept any PPO dental insurance?

In addition, if you are over 65, it is important to consider what Medicare does and does not cover.

Options for Additional Dental & Vision Coverage

  • Standalone Dental & Vision Plans: Standalone plans can be purchased separately from your health plan and include a wide variety of coverage options.
  • Dental & Vision Discount Plans: These are not insurance plans, but they can offer reduced rates on dental and vision services through a network of participating providers. Discount plans can provide savings on routine care and treatments, although they do not offer insurance coverage or financial protection.
  • If you are over 65, Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Many Medicare Advantage plans include dental and vision benefits. These plans can include coverage for routine dental care (i.e., cleanings and exams) and vision care (i.e., eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses).

Understanding your dental options can be difficult.

Dental insurance networks:  Most dentists don’t participate in dental insurance networks because they have to accept reduced fees for their services. When a dentist participates in a dental network, they have to agree to not charge the member more than the reimbursement fee schedule of the dental insurance company.

PPO dental insurance:  If your dentist will bill to PPO dental insurance plans, then you will want to pick a dental plan that offers the most reimbursement for your dental claims. Dental insurance companies use their own dental claims data to determine the maximum they will pay (using their participating dentists fees which are reduced)  You may have to pay the difference between what the dentist bills and what your dental insurance will pay.
